2004 Athens Olympics

Also called: Games of the XXVIII Olympiad, Athens 2004

After 108 years the Olympics returned to the city of the first Games. The shot put was held in the ancient stadium at Olympia, and the marathon followed the old route from Marathon to the Panathenaic Stadium.

Some 10,500 athletes from 201 nations took part from 13 to 29 August 2004. The shot put was held in the ancient stadium at Olympia, and, as in 1896, the marathon started at Marathon and finished in the Panathenaic Stadium, where the archery was also held. The American Michael Phelps won six swimming golds, and China came second in the gold medal table. The two Korean teams again marched in together, as in Sydney.
