Honil gangni yeokdae gukdo jido made
Kim Sa-hyeong, Yi Mu and Yi Hoe combined Yuan maps with maps of Joseon and Japan to make the world map Honil gangni yeokdae gukdo jido.
In 1402, the second year of Taejong, the map was made under Left State Councillor Kim Sa-hyeong and Right State Councillor Yi Mu, and drawn by Yi Hoe. According to the colophon by Gwon Geun, two Yuan maps — the Shengjiao guangbei tu and the Hunyi jiangli tu — were combined, and maps of Joseon and Japan were added. China is drawn large at the centre and Joseon second largest, and the map reaches west to Arabia, Europe and Africa.
It is one of the oldest surviving world maps in East Asia. The original is lost; copies survive at Ryukoku University in Japan and elsewhere. It shows both early Joseon’s broad view of the world and a China-centred worldview. In the mid-16th century the Joseon Bangyeok Jido, a map of the whole country, was made.
