Full Implementation of Local Autonomy
The first simultaneous local elections chose local council members and provincial and municipal heads by popular vote.
Local self-government was first introduced in 1952 and suspended after the May 16 coup. It resumed with local council elections in 1991 and was fully implemented on 27 June 1995, when council members and the heads of local governments were elected together for the first time.
