From the mid-1950s Kim Il Sung stressed an independent line under the banner of Juche (self-reliance) amid the Sino-Soviet dispute, and in the late 1960s made Juche the sole ideology.

In December 1972 North Korea promulgated a socialist constitution that concentrated power in the state president, a post Kim Il Sung assumed, and named Juche the guiding principle of the state.
