Compilation of the Samdaemok

At Queen Jinseong’s command the minister Wihong and the monk Daegu compiled the Samdaemok, an anthology of hyangga; it has not survived.

Hyangga are Silla songs written in hyangchal, which borrows Chinese characters for their sound and meaning to write Korean. With the Samdaemok lost, 14 survive in the Samguk yusa and 11 in the Goryeo-era Gyunyeo-jeon, among them Wolmyeong’s Requiem for a Dead Sister, Chungdam’s songs to Hwarang Gipa and for the peace of the people, and Cheoyong-ga.
