The tournament was held in Russia from 14 June to 15 July 2018, with the video assistant referee (VAR) used for the first time. South Korea lost 0–1 to Sweden and 1–2 to Mexico, then on 27 June in Kazan beat the holders Germany 2–0. Korea too went out in the group stage, but it was the first time in eighty years that Germany had fallen at the first hurdle. In the final at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium on 15 July, France beat first-time finalists Croatia 4–2, the nineteen-year-old Kylian Mbappé scoring.
