King Go (Dae Jo-yeong)

Former Goguryeo general who led Goguryeo refugees and Malgal people to found Balhae at Mount Dongmo in 698

After Goguryeo fell he was moved to Yingzhou in Liaoxi; when the Khitan revolt of Li Jinzhong threw Yingzhou into chaos in 696, he led Goguryeo refugees and Malgal people east. He routed a pursuing Tang army at Tianmenling and founded a state called Jin at Dongmosan near present-day Dunhua, Jilin. When Tang invested him as Prince of Bohai Commandery in 713, the name Balhae came into use. The Old Book of Tang calls him "a separate branch of Goguryeo," the New Book of Tang a Sumo Malgal, and views on his origin differ.
