Gyunyeo

Hwaeom monk under King Gwangjong who led Gwibeopsa and wrote the hyangga cycle Bohyeon sibwon-ga

He sought to reconcile the divided Southern (Hwaeomsa) and Northern (Buseoksa) schools within Hwaeom and taught the harmony of nature and form. Made abbot of Gwibeopsa, founded by King Gwangjong, he led the Hwaeom order. To make the teaching easy for ordinary people he wrote the eleven hyangga of the Bohyeon sibwon-ga, preserved in Hyeongnyeon Jeong’s biography of him, the Gyunyeo-jeon. He reorganized doctrinal Buddhism alongside Gwangjong’s strengthening of royal power and represented the Hwaeom school before Uicheon’s later unification of the doctrinal schools.
