Hong Gyeong-nae

Impoverished noble who led the 1811 uprising in Pyeongan; killed at Jeongju

Amid in-law government, discrimination against northwesterners and heavy exactions, he rose in 1811 at Dabokdong in Gasan, Pyeongan, with U Gun-chik, Kim Sa-yong and others. Impoverished yangban, miners, poor farmers and merchants joined, and for a time the rebels held many towns north of the Cheongcheon River. They held out in Jeongju Fortress for months until it fell to government troops in 1812.
