Yi Seung-hyu

Official under King Chungnyeol who wrote the Jewang ungi, tracing Korean history to Dangun

His pen name was Dongan geosa. After passing the civil examination he lived on Mount Duta in Samcheok caring for his mother, and also travelled to Yuan as an embassy secretary. Dismissed for remonstrating with King Chungnyeol, he withdrew to Mount Duta and in 1287 wrote and presented the Jewang ungi. Its first volume sets Chinese history in verse and its second Korean history from Dangun Joseon to Goryeo, portraying Korean history as equal to China’s and treating Balhae as Goguryeo’s successor. With Iryeon’s Samguk yusa it reflects a sense of independence under Yuan domination.
