Yoon Suk Yeol

A former prosecutor general, he was elected president in 2022 as the People Power Party candidate. On 3 December 2024 he declared martial law, but lifted it within hours after the National Assembly voted to demand its end. In December the Assembly passed an impeachment motion, and in April 2025 the Constitutional Court removed him from office. Indicted on charges of leading an insurrection in connection with the martial law declaration, he was sentenced to life imprisonment at first instance in February 2026; both he and the special counsel appealed, and the appeal trial is under way (as of October 2026).
