The pirates were led by a boy commander called Ajibaldo. Yi Seong-gye shot off his helmet and Yi Ji-ran shot him dead, and the band collapsed; the stream is said to have run red for six days. The victory made Yi Seong-gye famous. The victory stele erected under King Seonjo of Joseon was destroyed in the colonial period; today’s stele is a reconstruction.
