Gwanggaeto Subdues Eastern Buyeo

King Gwanggaeto led an army against Eastern Buyeo and received its submission; his stele records 64 fortresses and 1,400 villages taken.

Eastern Buyeo was said to have been founded by Haeburu after moving east from Buyeo, and in legend it was where Jumong grew up. The stele says it had been subject to Goguryeo since Jumong’s day but rebelled and stopped tribute, so in 410 (Yeongnak 20) the king marched in person, and the whole country submitted in fear.

The campaign secured Goguryeo’s north-east. Eastern Buyeo is usually placed on the lower Tumen, though this is debated. The Buyeo royal house itself surrendered to Goguryeo under King Munja in 494.
