Liu Bei Enters Shu

Also called: Liu Bei’s conquest of Yi province

In 211 Liu Zhang of Yi province invited Liu Bei in to help defend against Cao Cao and Zhang Lu; within three years Liu Bei had taken Yi province instead, entering Chengdu in 214 — the foundation of the three-way division.

In 211 Liu Zhang, governor of Yi, invited Liu Bei in to guard against Zhang Lu of Hanzhong. Having entered with his army, Liu Bei turned on Liu Zhang the next year and marched on Chengdu; his strategist Pang Tong was killed by an arrow while besieging Luocheng. From Jing, Zhuge Liang, Zhang Fei and Zhao Yun came up the Yangtze to join him.

When Liu Bei surrounded Chengdu in 214, Liu Zhang surrendered rather than make his people suffer further. With the broad, fertile land of Yi, Liu Bei at last had the strength to rival Cao Cao and Sun Quan. Jing he entrusted to Guan Yu.
