The tournament was held in Chile from 30 May to 17 June 1962; the country went ahead despite the 1960 Valdivia earthquake, the strongest ever recorded. Brazil lost Pelé to injury in their second match, but Garrincha led the side, and in the final at Santiago’s Estadio Nacional on 17 June they beat Czechoslovakia 3–1 to retain the title. The hosts Chile finished third.
