An Jeong-bok (Sunam)

Also called: Sunam

Southerner Silhak scholar and Yi Ik's disciple who set out Korea's own line of legitimacy in the Dongsa gangmok

A Southerner Silhak scholar trained by Yi Ik, he spent many years studying in Gwangju, Gyeonggi. In the Dongsa gangmok he traced a line of legitimacy through Dangun Joseon, Gija Joseon, Mahan, Unified Silla and Goryeo, treated the Three Kingdoms as a period without legitimacy and stressed checking sources against one another. He also compiled the Yeoljo tonggi on Joseon history. In the Cheonhakgo and Cheonhak mundap he criticised Catholicism from a Neo-Confucian standpoint.
