Choe Hang

Son of Choe U and third ruler of the Choe military regime, who kept up resistance to the Mongols from Ganghwa

A son of Choe U, he had been a monk before returning to lay life and succeeding to his father’s power in 1249. Based on Ganghwa, he kept up the resistance to the Mongols, and the carving of the Tripitaka Koreana, begun under Choe U in 1236, was completed under his rule in 1251. He held on to power while repeated Mongol invasions ravaged the mainland, and died in 1257. His son Choe Ui succeeded him but was killed by Kim Jun and others the following year, ending the Choe regime.
