Danjong

Sixth king of Joseon, deposed by his uncle Sejo and killed in exile at Yeongwol

Munjong's son, he came to the throne at 12, and ministers such as Kim Jong-seo and Hwangbo In ran the government. After his uncle Grand Prince Suyang seized power in the Gyeyu Coup of 1453, he gave up the throne in 1455 and became retired king. When the Six Martyred Ministers' plan to restore him came to light in 1456, he was demoted to Prince Nosan and exiled to Cheongnyeongpo in Yeongwol. Under Sukjong he was restored and given the temple name Danjong.
