Iryeon

Monk who compiled the Samguk yusa, preserving the Dangun legend, Buddhist history and folk tales

He received the posthumous title National Preceptor Bogak. The Samguk yusa, written during the period of Yuan interference, first records the founding of Gojoseon by Dangun in its "Marvels" section and preserves Buddhist history, folk tales and fourteen hyangga songs. By tracing Korean history back to Dangun it is seen, together with Yi Seung-hyu's Jewang ungi of the same period, as an expression of national self-awareness. He spent his last years at Ingaksa in Gunwi.
