Leonardo da Vinci

Also called: Leonardo

Renaissance painter and scientist who painted The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa and filled notebooks on anatomy, machines and flight — the “universal man”

Born at Vinci near Florence, the illegitimate son of a notary, he trained in Verrocchio’s workshop. In the service of Duke Sforza of Milan he painted The Last Supper, and later, at the invitation of King Francis I, he moved to France and died at Amboise. He dissected corpses to draw the human body and left thousands of notebook pages in mirror writing, with designs for flying machines, armoured vehicles and canals.
