Park Chung-hee
5th–9th President (1963–1979). Led the May 16 coup, the five-year economic plans and the Yushin system; killed in the October 26 incident
After the May 16 Military Coup of 1961 he chaired the Supreme Council for National Reconstruction, and in 1963 he defeated Yun Po-sun to win the presidency. From 1962 he pursued the Five-Year Economic Development Plans, driving export-led industrialisation, opened the Gyeongbu Expressway and launched the Saemaul Movement. Amid the June 3 Protests he concluded the Treaty on Basic Relations between Korea and Japan in 1965, and he sent troops to Vietnam. The Third-Term Amendment of 1969 let him defeat Kim Dae-jung in 1971. After the July 4 South–North Joint Statement of 1972, the October Yushin created a constitution under which the National Conference for Unification elected the president, and emergency decrees suppressed opposition. Following the YH Trading Incident and the Busan–Masan Democratic Protests, he was shot dead by Kim Jae-gyu in the October 26 Incident.
