Park Jong-chul

Seoul National University student who died under police torture in January 1987, a trigger of the June Democratic Struggle

In January 1987 he died under water torture at the police anti-communist investigation office in Namyeong-dong, Seoul. Police claimed he died of shock when an officer struck the desk, but in May the Catholic Priests' Association for Justice revealed that the case had been minimised and covered up. Anger over this and the April 13 decision to keep the constitution led to the National Movement Headquarters for a Democratic Constitution and the June Democratic Struggle.
