Aguda (Emperor Taizu of Jin)

Also called: Wanyan Aguda, Emperor Taizu of Jin

Chief of the Wanyan Jurchens who founded the Jin in 1115 (r. 1115–1123), organised his army in meng’an–mouke units and all but destroyed the Liao

Son of the Wanyan chief Helibo, he succeeded his brother Wuyashu as head of the Jurchen confederation in 1113. Legend has it that he alone refused when the Liao Tianzuo Emperor ordered the Jurchen chiefs to dance for him. Rebelling against Liao in 1114, he won at Ningjiang and Chuhedian and the next year proclaimed himself emperor of Jin. He took the Liao city of Yanjing in 1122 but died of illness the following year; his brother Taizong (Wuqimai) went on to destroy the Liao in 1125 and the Northern Song in 1127.
