Yi I (Yulgok)

Also called: Yulgok

Neo-Confucian scholar who founded the Giho school; author of the Seonghak jipyo, Dongho mundap and Gyeongmong yogyeol, and advocate of reforms

Viewing principle and material force together but stressing the working of material force, he held that only material force issues while principle rides upon it. In 1575 he presented the Seonghak jipyo to King Seonjo and urged reform in the Dongho mundap and the Manon bongsa. He advocated paying tribute in rice (sumibeop) and drew up the Haeju and Seowon village codes. He tried to reconcile the Easterners and Westerners, and his school passed to the Westerners. Tradition says he called for training an army of 100,000.
