Yi Je-ma

Also called: Dongmu

Founded Sasang medicine, which treats people according to four constitutions, and wrote the Dongui suse bowon

A military officer from Hamheung, he travelled widely in his youth in pursuit of learning. In 1894 he wrote the Dongui suse bowon, founding Sasang medicine, which divides people into four constitutions — Taeyang, Taeeum, Soyang and Soeum — and treats illness according to constitution. In his last years he treated patients and revised the book in his home town of Hamheung, and his disciples published it in 1901, after his death.
