Yi Man-son
Gyeongsang Confucian scholar who headed the 1881 Yeongnam Memorial of Ten Thousand against A Strategy for Korea
In 1880 Kim Hong-jip, returning from the second mission to Japan, brought back Huang Zunxian's Strategy for Korea, which advised friendship with China and alliance with Japan and the United States to check Russia. In 1881 he led a memorial signed by some ten thousand Yeongnam scholars that opposed ties with America and demanded Kim Hong-jip's punishment. The government exiled him, and the movement to defend orthodoxy and reject heterodoxy spread nationwide.
