A disciple of Yi Hang-no, he carried on the ideology of defending orthodoxy and rejecting heterodoxy. In 1895 he raised a righteous army at Jecheon against the Eulmi Incident and the topknot decree, and his forces took Chungju fortress. In 1910 he organised the Thirteen-Province Righteous Army in the Russian Maritime Province with Yi Sang-seol and others and was named its commander-in-chief, but after the annexation Russian suppression ended its activities.
