Toyotomi Hideyori
Son and heir of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who held Osaka Castle until it fell in the Osaka campaign of 1615, when he took his own life with his mother Yodo-dono
Born at Osaka Castle to Toyotomi Hideyoshi and his consort Yodo-dono, daughter of Azai Nagamasa, he lost his father at the age of five in 1598. A regency of the Five Elders and Five Commissioners was set up to uphold him, but after Sekigahara he was reduced to a daimyo of some 650,000 koku. He married Tokugawa Hidetada’s daughter Senhime in 1603 and met Ieyasu at Nijō Castle in 1611. In his father’s memory he rebuilt many temples and shrines; the inscription on the bell of one of them, the Hōkō-ji, became the pretext for the Osaka campaign. He took his own life when Osaka Castle fell in 1615.
