Battle of Sangju
Yi Il met the Japanese at Bukcheon, Sangju, with hastily gathered men, who broke before the muskets. Yi fled alone to join Sin Rip at Chungju.
The court sent Yi Il south as commander, but no troops could be raised in the capital and he set out almost alone. At Sangju he gathered a few hundred scattered farmers and townspeople, and even beheaded a man who reported the enemy’s approach for spreading alarm.
On the 25th of the fourth month Konishi’s first division struck. The untrained men soon scattered before the muskets, and Yi fled, abandoning his horse and clothes. He crossed the Saejae pass to join Sin Rip at Chungju, and was beaten again at Tangeumdae three days later.
