Geumsansa was built up by the Unified Silla monk Jinpyo as a centre of Maitreya worship. Mireukjeon burned in the Jeongyu invasion and was rebuilt in 1635 (13th year of King Injo). Three storeys outside, it is open from floor to roof inside to hold a standing Maitreya more than 11 m tall. Each storey bears a different name board (Daejabojeon, Yonghwajihoe, Mireukjeon).
It is the only three-storey wooden Buddhist hall in Korea and a National Treasure. With Palsangjeon at Beopjusa and Gakhwangjeon at Hwaeomsa it represents 17th-century Buddhist architecture. Geumsansa is also known as the temple where Gyeon Hwon of Later Baekje was confined after his son Singeom seized the throne.
