Sixteenth king of Joseon, enthroned by coup; endured two Manchu invasions and surrendered at Samjeondo
In 1623 he deposed Gwanghaegun with the Westerners and took the throne, adopting a policy of favouring the Ming and rejecting the Later Jin. He fled to Gongju during Yi Gwal's Rebellion in 1624. In the First Manchu Invasion of 1627 he took refuge on Ganghwa and accepted a "brotherly" relationship with the Later Jin; in the Second Manchu Invasion of 1636 he held out in Namhansanseong before surrendering to Hong Taiji at Samjeondo in 1637. Crown Prince Sohyeon and Grand Prince Bongnim (later Hyojong) were taken to Qing as hostages. He enacted the Yeongjeong Law fixing the land tax at 4–6 du per gyeol and set up the Eoyeongcheong, Chongyungcheong and Sueocheong army camps.
