The Games ran from 8 to 24 February. The revelation in 1998 that IOC members had been given money and gifts during the bid led to several resignations and reforms, including a ban on members visiting candidate cities. In pairs figure skating, collusion among judges came to light and a second gold was awarded to the Canadian pair, leading to a new scoring system.

In the men’s 1500 m short-track final, South Korea’s Kim Dong-sung crossed the line first but was disqualified for impeding, and the gold went to Apolo Anton Ohno of the United States, provoking widespread anger in Korea. Korea won golds through Ko Gi-hyun in the women’s 1500 m and in the women’s 3000 m relay.
