Joseon Sovereignty Restoration Corps

Yun Sang-tae, Seo Sang-il and others founded the secret society in Daegu under the banner of Dangun, raising funds for the independence movement and joining the March First Movement.

In 1915 Confucian scholars and intellectuals of Gyeongsang led by Yun Sang-tae and Seo Sang-il set up a tablet of Dangun at Anilam hermitage on Apsan in Daegu and swore to restore the nation’s sovereignty. To escape surveillance they met in the guise of a poetry club.

They raised funds for the independence movement in Manchuria and elsewhere, and some members also joined the Korea Restoration Association founded the same year. They led demonstrations in Gyeongsang during the March First Movement, and the organization was exposed after helping the Confucian scholars’ Paris petition.
