Resignation and Exile of Syngman Rhee

Forced out by the April Revolution, Syngman Rhee left for Hawaii and died in Honolulu in 1965.

Syngman Rhee announced his resignation on 26 April 1960, and the National Assembly accepted it the next day. On 28 April he left Gyeongmudae for his private residence, Ihwajang, and on 29 May he flew to Hawaii with his wife Francesca.

He tried several times to return home from Honolulu without success, and died in a Honolulu nursing home on 19 July 1965 at the age of 90. His remains were brought back to Seoul and buried on 27 July at the National Cemetery (now Seoul National Cemetery).
