Choe Chung

Chief minister turned teacher whose Nine-Course Academy led the private schools; called the "Confucius of the East"

His Nine-Course Academy, known as Munheon-gongdo, became the most prosperous of the Twelve Private Academies in Gaegyeong. As students flocked to private academies run by former examiners, state schools such as the Gukjagam declined, which later prompted the efforts of Sukjong and Yejong to revive official education.
