Wonjong

Peasant leader who rose with Aeno at Sabeol-ju (Sangju) in 889

With farmers ruined by true-bone extravagance and bad harvests, he rose up when the court sent officials to press for taxes. The official sent to crush the rising was too afraid to advance. It set off peasant revolts across the country, after which the Silla government controlled little beyond Gyeongju.
