Yose (National Preceptor Wonmyo)

Cheontae monk who led the White Lotus Society at Mandeoksa in Gangjin, stressing Lotus Sutra faith and repentance

A Cheontae monk, he joined Jinul’s community for a time but went his own way. From around 1216 he led the White Lotus Society at Mandeoksa in Gangjin (today’s Baengnyeonsa), stressing faith in the Lotus Sutra, repentance practice and rebirth in the Pure Land. Emphasizing practice over difficult doctrine, he won the support of ordinary people and local clerks in the provinces. With Jinul’s Suseonsa, it represents the society movements of the military-regime period that sought to cleanse a corrupt Buddhist establishment.
