Hyesim (National Preceptor Jingak)

Disciple and successor of Jinul at Suseonsa who taught the unity of Confucianism and Buddhism

After passing the preliminary civil examination and studying at the National Academy, he became Jinul’s disciple when his mother died. In 1210 he succeeded Jinul as head of Suseonsa. He taught that Confucianism and Buddhism are not different, a view credited with preparing the ground for the later reception of Neo-Confucianism. He compiled the Seonmun yeomsongjip, a collection of Seon koans, and under him Suseonsa grew greatly with the backing of the military regime.
