Jinul (National Preceptor Bojo)

Monk who led the Suseonsa society and revived Seon as the Jogye order, teaching joint cultivation of meditation and wisdom

In 1190 he wrote the "Encouragement to Practice" and founded the Samadhi and Prajna Society; after it moved to Gilsangsa on Songgwangsan, King Huijong renamed it Suseonsa (today’s Songgwangsa in Suncheon). He urged monks to balance scripture reading, meditation and labour, and taught sudden enlightenment followed by gradual cultivation (doneo jeomsu) and the joint cultivation of meditation and wisdom (jeonghye ssangsu), embracing the doctrinal schools within Seon. His disciple Hyesim argued that Confucianism and Buddhism were one.
