Sixty-four nations competed from 8 to 23 February at Albertville, in Savoie, and the surrounding mountain villages. Just after the end of the Cold War, a reunified Germany sent a single team, the former Soviet republics competed together as the “Unified Team”, and Croatia and Slovenia appeared as new nations.

South Korea won its first Winter Olympic medals here. Speed skater Kim Yoon-man took silver in the men’s 1000 m for the first medal, and in short track, now an Olympic sport, Kim Ki-hoon won the men’s 1000 m in world-record time for the first gold. Kim Ki-hoon, Lee Joon-ho, Mo Ji-soo and Song Jae-kun also won the men’s 5000 m relay. Korea finished tenth overall with two golds, a silver and a bronze.
