Kim Ki-hoon

South Korean short-track speed skater who won Korea’s first Winter Olympic gold in the 1000 m at Albertville in 1992 and retained the title at Lillehammer in 1994

Born in Seoul, he was a speed skater until, at his coach’s urging, he entered Korea’s first national short-track trials in 1984 and made the team. At the 1992 Albertville Games, where short track became an Olympic sport, he won the men’s 1000 m in world-record time for South Korea’s first Winter Olympic gold, and also won the men’s 5000 m relay. Retaining the 1000 m title at Lillehammer in 1994 brought his Olympic golds to three. After retiring he became a coach.
