Baeksan Uprising

Rising again at Mujang, the peasant army gathered at Baeksan, set up the Honam Righteous Army headquarters and issued its manifesto and four principles.

Jeon Bong-jun became commander-in-chief, with Son Hwa-jung and Kim Gae-nam under him. The manifesto called for "beheading the cruel officials within and driving out the arrogant enemies without"; the four principles were not to kill, to be loyal and filial and save the world, to expel the Japanese and Westerners, and to march on the capital and remove the powerful. White-clad peasants covered the hill, so that "standing it was a white mountain, sitting a mountain of bamboo spears". Sources differ slightly on the dates of the Mujang rising (20th day of the 3rd lunar month) and the Baeksan muster.
