Buddhism Comes to Baekje

King Chimnyu welcomed the Indian monk Marananta, who came by sea from Eastern Jin, and adopted Buddhism.

Marananta arrived from Eastern Jin in the ninth month of 384, and Chimnyu received him with honour inside the palace. A temple was built at Hansan the next year with ten monks. Twelve years after Goguryeo (372), Buddhism was again adopted from the top down, as an ideology supporting the crown.

Baekje Buddhism flourished under King Seong: the monk Gyeomik brought the Vinaya teachings back from India, and in 552 Norisachigye carried images and sutras to Wa. King Mu later built Mireuksa at Iksan.
