In 1904 Phan Bội Châu founded the Modernization Society under the Nguyễn prince Cường Để, and in 1905 he went to Japan, victorious in the Russo-Japanese War, to seek help. There, at Liang Qichao’s urging, he wrote the History of the Loss of Vietnam, which was also translated in Korea and widely read during the patriotic enlightenment movement. He led the Đông Du ("Go East") movement, which sent some 200 young Vietnamese to study in Japan. But after signing an agreement with France in 1907, Japan expelled the students and Phan Bội Châu in 1908–1909, and the movement ended.
