The Games ran from 6 to 22 February. They were the first Olympics with two official host cities: ice events were held mainly in Milan, and snow events at Cortina d’Ampezzo, host in 1956, and in Valtellina (Bormio and Livigno) and Val di Fiemme. The opening ceremony took place at Milan’s San Siro stadium and the closing ceremony in the Verona Arena, a Roman amphitheatre. Some 2,884 athletes from 92 National Olympic Committees contested 116 events, and ski mountaineering became an Olympic sport. Russian and Belarusian athletes, under sanctions over the invasion of Ukraine, competed only as Individual Neutral Athletes without national identification, twenty in all. Norway set Winter Games records with 18 golds and 41 medals.

South Korea finished 13th with three golds, four silvers and three bronzes. Choi Ga-on won the women’s snowboard halfpipe, Korea’s first Olympic gold in snowboarding, and in short track Kim Gil-li won the women’s 1500 m while Choi Min-jeong, Kim Gil-li, Lee So-yeon, Noh Do-hee and Shim Suk-hee won the women’s 3000 m relay.
