After the move to Ungjin, King Munju was murdered by a noble and King Dongseong fell to an assassin. Muryeong, crowned in 501, executed Dongseong’s killer Baekga, repeatedly beat back Goguryeo and the Malgal, repaired embankments and sent drifting people back to the land.

In 521 he told the Liang court that Baekje had "become strong once again", and Emperor Wu named him Great General Who Pacifies the East. His epitaph stone calls him "Great General Who Pacifies the East, Sama, King of Baekje".
