Crown Prince Sado
Yeongjo's son and Jeongjo's father, who died locked in a rice chest
From age 15 he ran state affairs on Yeongjo's behalf as regent, but conflict with his father deepened. In 1762, on Yeongjo's orders, he was shut in a rice chest and died eight days later (the Imo Incident). The affair divided the Sipa, who sympathised with him, from the Byeokpa, who upheld Yeongjo's decision. On taking the throne Jeongjo moved his tomb to Suwon and named it Hyeollyeongwon.
