Battle of Gochang

Wang Geon crushed Gyeon Hwon’s Later Baekje army at Gochang (Andong), winning Goryeo the initiative among the Later Three Kingdoms.

The local magnates Kim Seon-pyeong, Gwon Haeng and Jang Jeong-pil fought on Goryeo’s side, and with generals such as Yu Geum-pil Goryeo killed more than 8,000 Later Baekje soldiers. The three magnates became the founders of the Andong Kim, Gwon and Jang clans.

Afterwards some 110 fortresses along the east coast of Gyeongsang submitted to Goryeo, and Silla came to lean on it. The battle reversed the defeat at Gongsan and gave Goryeo the lead in reunifying the peninsula.
