Person

Seol Chong

Wonhyo's son, who systematized idu to read the Confucian classics in Korean and wrote the parable Hwawanggye for King Sinmun

With Gangsu and Choe Chi-won he is counted among Silla’s leading Confucian scholars of head-rank six. Idu, a way of writing Korean with the sounds and meanings of Chinese characters, was not his invention, but he is credited with systematising it. The Hwawanggye tells of the peony, king of flowers, torn between a flattering rose and an upright pasqueflower, urging the king to keep away from flatterers and uphold virtue. Under King Hyeonjong of Goryeo he was posthumously titled Marquis Hongyu and enshrined in the Confucian shrine.
